Pop Warner Information about Player Concussions and Safety
Our core mission is enabling young people to benefit from participation in team sports and activities in a safe and structured environment. As we continue to fulfill that mission we must also help educate the public about the facts around head injuries and how today’s version of Pop Warner is a model for making youth football a safer and better experience than ever.
Some advocates and media reports have generated confusion and fear about youth football. Although research connecting football to long term brain injury is inconclusive and lacking scientific consensus, some are calling for the abolishment of youth tackle
football because they believe it is the only way to keep kids safe.
Proposed legislation in several states would ban the sport for children under 13/14; some look to ban tackle before 19.
This document offers Pop Warner’s perspective. Please refer to it when asked about Pop Warner’s positions.

A SAFER LEAGUE IS A BETTER LEAGUE
Rancho San Diego Pop Warner is a USA Football Certified Youth Sports program. More information can be found at the USA Football website.
Heads Up Football is the safer way to practice and play. USA Football has worked with leaders in both medicine and sport across the country to create a full-featured program that any league or school can use to address key safety issues — and ensure that every coach understands and knows how to implement each component of the program.
Working with leading football experts and medical professionals, USA Football developed Heads Up Football specifically to meet the needs of player safety.
Youth football leagues are implementing the Heads Up Football program — and are realizing the benefits that certified coaches and a commitment to safety can bring. Listen to what league administrators are saying about encouraging consistent high standards and training across all of their teams.
